Restoration Project: The Matteson House on Center Street

57 Center Street, Seville, Ohio 44273
A hidden gem, designed to be admired, gets a second chance.

The Matteson House on Center Street, circa 1916

After time as a pitcher for the St. Louis Maroons baseball team in 1884, Clifford (Cliff) Virgil Matteson and his wife Cora Matteson took an 1830s cabin on this property and added a Victorian house to the front. As the owner of the dry goods store in town, they spared no expense. The cabin became the rear kitchen and they built the rest as a showpiece with leaded glass windows, ornate woodwork, and spacious rooms for the Matteson’s to entertain. In the early 1900s, while Cliff was mayor of Seville, the Matteson’s used their home to host parties, and (as the story goes) often featuring members of the Barnum and Bailey Circus who came to town visiting the Giants of Seville.

* This project aims to restore this building to the point in time reflected in the above history.
